I would like to upgrade my Gromacs workstation and am looking into ways to increase the performance of my current home computer. Is it worth buying 4x rtx 3070 and i9 11th. I know the overall results depend on many factors, such as gromacs build etc., but the hardware is probably one of the most important things. Is gromacs effective for computers with multiple GPUs?
Look for RTX 40 cards, 4 x card in a single workstation <2 x2 worksattion

I’m also thinking about buying a single rtx 4080 (at the same price) is it a better option? It will be much easier to set up, but I wonder if it will give reasonable performance compared to 4x rtx 3070. Is it possible to combine rtx 30 and 40 to get both these gpus?

The performance of Geforce graphics cards is generally linearly related to their price. Usually the parallel efficiency of multiple GPU is less than n times of single GPU, so it is worth buying a better single GPU until it becomes difficult to furthe improve the performance of the single GPU (like 4090).
I would suggest RTC 4070, there is performance vs price balance i found there. You can build a 2 x system with 4070 and atleast a 10 core processor/minimum may be. The choice depends on many factors, you need to see the performance and market price and the possibility of accomodation/power supply cooling at your office.
