According to the developers, GROMACS 2020 and 2019 are under active maintenance. Only highly conservative fixes are made in the later and only address issues that affect scientific correctness. Therefore, 2019 cannot be guaranteed by the developers to provide the same results on current hardware. How to justify the use of GROMACS 2019?
Nobody said 2019 was wrong, or similar. Just that 2020 has some capabilities and fixes that 2019 does not. So if you’ve done work with 2019 and nothing in the release notes for the 2020 series (Welcome to the GROMACS documentation! — GROMACS documentation) suggests you’ve run into a silent bug then there’s no problem. People routinely publish work with versions that are a couple of years old, deciding that consistency with past work is more important to them than the improvements to performance or the improved capabilities!
