In calculating the number of salt bridges, should we measure the distance between the positively charged nitrogen atom from basic residues and the singly bonded oxygen atom in the carboxylate group of acidic residues, or can we also consider the doubly bonded oxygen in the carboxylate group? Is a distance of 0.4 nanometers acceptable for a salt bridge or not?
