Why do we call topology files 'topology'?

This is a question i confused about since i begin to learn how to use GROMACS.
I don’t major in mathmatics. Does naming it like this means any connection or similarity between this file and topology in mathematics?

The topology file contains (among other things) the bonds in the system. Therefore it describes the connectivity of the molecules, and does so without reference to the actual coordinate of the atoms making up those molecules.

In that way, it is (very remotely) similar to how topology is concerned about characteristics of geometrical objects without reference to their individual points.
